Co Operative movement

Co-operatives are voluntary organisations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Autonomy and Independence

Co-operatives are autonomous, self-help organisations controlled by their members. If a co-operative organisation enters into an agreement with any other organisation, including the Government, or raise capital from external sources, it do so on terms that ensure democratic control by its members and maintains its co-operative autonomy.

Education, Training and Information

Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers and employees; so, they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. The general public-particularly young people and opinion leaders, are regularly informed about the nature and benefits of co-operatives.

The office of the Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Thanjavur Region is a district level office functioning under the Control of Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Chennai. The Joint Registrar’s office is located in the Co operative Office  Campus near by  samiyappa institute ,Medical college Road, Thanjavur. The offices of the circle Deputy Registrars of Cooperative Societies functioning in theThanjavur  District are Thanajavur,Kumbakonam,pattukottai Circles  are under the control of the Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies. The office of the Deputy Registrar (PDS) also functioning  first floor of the joint registrar office campus under the control of the Joint Registrar.

PRIMARY AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVE CREDIT SOCIETIES (PACCS)

Functions

• It provide credit to the farmers, distribute inputs like fertilizers and also run outlets under Public Distribution System.
• These banks provide short term and medium term credit for agriculture and allied activities.
• The short term loans are repayable within a period of 12 to 15 months and the medium term loans are repayable within 3 to 5 years.
• The loan amount exceeding this limit is secured with mortgage of property or pledge of jewels.
• Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies also issue loans for other agricultural purposes like purchase of farm machineries
• To provide marketing facilities for the sale of agricultural produce
• To associate itself with economic and social welfare programmes of the village.

Public Distribution System (PDS) is a poverty alleviation programme and contributes towards the social welfare of the people. Essential commodities like rise, wheat, palm oil, kerosene, sugar, etc., are distributed at a lower price, which has government’s contributions of subsidy.

PDS THROUGH CO OPERATIVES

Lead Societies and Link Societies For the purpose of PDS the Cooperative Marketing Societies and Cooperative Wholesale Consumer Stores are acting as lead societies and they procure and distribute the rationed articles to the link societies. The Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks are acting as link societies. Both lead societies and link societies are running FPS to distribute the rationed articles to the cardholders.

cooperative marketing are to arrange for the marketing of agricultural produce of the agricultural members at a reasonable and remunerative price, to distribute farm inputs to the agriculturists, to advance loans on the pledge of agricultural produce, to undertake processing of the agricultural commodities and to help in better recovery of loans through linking of credit with marketing.

Cooperative Wholesale Stores

cooperative wholesale stores in the district  function as lead societies and play a vital role in the functioning of the public distribution system. They take delivery of essential commodities from the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation godowns and distribute them to the public through their own shops and through the shops run by the primary societies.

Primary Cooperative Stores

In the District primary stores which include students’ cooperative stores, employees’ cooperative stores, women cooperative stores and other primary cooperative stores. These primary cooperative stores are engaged in distribution of quality consumer goods at reasonable prices to the public. They also function as the outlets for distribution of essential commodities to the public under the public distribution system.

Cooperative Printing Press

In our district one cooperative printing press functioning under the Cooperative Department are catering to the printing needs of all cooperatives, government, quasi government agencies, local bodies and the general public
