Integrated Child Development Services Scheme [ICDS]

OBJECTIVES :

Today’s Children are tomorrow’s nation builders.  Today’s adolescent girls are tomorrow’s health mothers.  There are the assets to the country.  Having this as objective the Department of ICDS is functioning towards the goal of “Malnutrition free Tamilnadu”.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has taken decisive steps to address the nutrition and health needs of children below six years, pregnant women, lactating mothers and adolescent girls.  With a strong push towards universalization of the ICDS programme,  ICDS services have been steadily extended to serve unreached habitations, under-served populations and hard to reach areas of the State.

FUNCTION OF ICDS:

  • Lay foundation for the proper psychological, physical and social development of the child.
  • Improve nutritional and health status of children below six years.
  • Reduce incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropouts
  • Achieve effective coordination of policy and implementation amongst various departments
  • Enhance the capabilities of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional needs of child through proper nutrition and health education.

I.TARGET GROUPS / BENEFICIARIES:

  • Children in the age group of 0-72 months
  • Adolescent girls
  • Pregnant women and Lactation mothers

II.SERVICES DELIVERED AT CHILD CENTRE (ANGANWADI CENTRE):

  • Early Childhood Care, Antenatal care and Postnatal care.
  • Growth Monitoring
  • Supplementary nutrition
  • Health services by Health Personnel (Village Health Nurse / Medical Officer)
  • Referral services
  • Non-formal Pre-School Education imparting pre-school education to bring about holistic development of the child through play-way method.
  • Nutrition and Health Education
  • Nutrition and Life skill education for Adolescent Girls
  • Provision of Nutritious Hot cooked Meal for the children in the age group of 2 to 6 years.
  • Under Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (SABLA) Supplementary Nutrition in the form of Weaning Food (THIR), life skill training and vocational training are given to Adolescent Girls in 139 Blocks in 9 Districts, viz Salem, Thiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram, Kaniyakumari, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Chennai.
  • Create awareness about the schemes through information, Education and Communication activities
  • Services for the Infants : 0-3 years:
    • Weight monitoring – on monthly basis
    • Supplementary nutrition in the form of weaning food
    • Immunisation of children
    • Administration of Vitamin-A Solution, IFA Tablets/Syrup
    • Management of diarrhoeal disorder and acute respiratory infection
    • Bi-annual Deworming
  • Services to children 3-5 / Years:
    • Weight monitoring – quarterly basis
    • Provision of Supplementary Nutrition – Hot cooked meal
    • Boiled eggs (thrice a week or Banana)
    • Bengal / Green gram on Tuesday
    • Boiled Potatoes on Friday
    • Immunisation of children
    • Administration of Vitamin-A solution, IFA Tablets
    • Management of diarrheal disorder and acute respiratory infection
    • Bi-annual Deworming for children
    • Imparting Pre-School education to bring aboutholistic development of the child through play-way method.
  • Services to Adolescent Girls:
    • Upgradation of Life skills and Vocational skills
    • Supplementary Nutrition in the form of Weaning food (130 grams / per day) on weekly basis as take home ration
    • Creation of awareness on Health and Hygiene, Legal and Public services
    • Health services – supply of De-worming tablets and iron & Folic Acid.
  • Services to Pregnant and Lactating Mothers:
    • Early registration on confirmation of pregnancy
    • Provision of supplementary nutrition in the form of weaning food to pregnant women from the date of their registration until their delivery.  For lactating mothers from the date of delivery to 6 months.
    • Immunisation to Pregnant Mothers
    • Antenatal and Postnatal care – Pregnancy weight gain monitoring, nutrition supplementation, Anemia control and periodical referral for medical examination.
      • Referral of High risk mothers to Primary Health Centre / District Hospitals for higher medical facility. Awareness creation on health and hygiene, Nutritional management for children, home management skills and child care practices like exclusive breast feeding for first 6 months, feeding during illness etc.,

  1. SCHEMES FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS:
  • Rajive Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (SABLA) 11-18 years:
    • The above scheme The above scheme (SABLA) has two components, namely Supplementary nutrition component and Non-supplementary nutrition component.
    • Under the supplementary component of the scheme, 130 grms of weaning food is provided to the Adolescent Girls for 300 days in a year.
    • Under the non supplementary nutrition component of this scheme, Training, Information, Education and Communication activities and Health awareness programme are provided to improve their nutritional and health status,. up gradation of home management skills, life skills and vocational skills. The girls are equipped with information on health and family welfare, hygiene, legal rights, home management and the guidance on existing public services like filing FIR in police station, how to use bank and post office facilities etc.  The scheme also aims to mainstream the out of school girls into formal education / non-formal education.
  • Kishori Shakthi Yojana:
    • This scheme is exclusively for the benefit of adolescent girls to create awareness about their legal rights, to improve literacy, health, hygienic aspects and provide occupational skills to shape them into better cititisens.
    • Awareness camps on Nutrition, Health, Legal rights, Home management and child care are conducted for school going and school dropout adolescent girls in the age group of 11 – 15 years.
    • Vocational training trades such as Computer education, Catering services, Tailoring, Lab technician, Nursing Assistant, Soft toy making and Handicrafts and Fashion designing etc., is imparted through reputed institutions to adolescent girls in the age group of 16 – 18 years.
  • This programme increases self confidence and also improves nutritional and health status of Adolescent Girls. It also creates awareness of hygiene, family welfare, improves their ability of Home management and understanding of child care practices and enable them to gain better understanding of their environment relating to social issues and its impact on their lives.
